The inspiration for the Berfend Breakfast Knife came from the observation that it can be challenging to get liquid foods with a regular knife. Often, people resort to adding extra spoons or spinning the knife to prevent the liquid from pouring out. Ayse Kirimli recognized this problem and designed the Berfend Breakfast Knife as a practical solution to decrease the number of tableware needed and simplify the breakfast experience.
What sets the Berfend Breakfast Knife apart is its combination of the forms of a knife and a spoon in one product. By holding the knife as a spoon and using its spoon-like curve, users can easily scoop up liquid foods without the need for additional utensils. This design innovation not only enhances functionality but also adds a touch of creativity to the breakfast table.
The Berfend Breakfast Knife is made using stainless steel, a durable and common material for tableware. The pressing method is employed during production to create the unique curve of the knife. The result is a high-quality product that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
With its concave shape specifically designed for liquid foods, the Berfend Breakfast Knife measures 170 mm x 19 mm x 5 mm. The packaging is made of cardboard, reflecting the design's commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness.
The Berfend Breakfast Knife was developed in Turkey, with the project starting in November 2013 and concluding in January 2014. It was exhibited in the IMMIB industrial design competition, where it received the prestigious 1st prize.
Ayse Kirimli's design process involved extensive research and observation of breakfast habits. The need for a product that could effectively handle liquid foods like honey and jam was identified, leading to the development of the Berfend Breakfast Knife. Prototypes were created and tested, with the curved shape proving to be highly effective in holding liquid on the knife.
