Extend: Extending Residential Apartment

Home is a place where generations and memories are continuously extended, one after another. In the case of this residential apartment, the design takes inspiration from the homeowner's journey of leaving their hometown to start a new life in the city. This apartment holds sentimental value as it is the first home they bought and where they started their own family.

The design concept revolves around the idea of extending life and love within the home. A tree serves as a metaphor for this extension, symbolizing the vital growth and connection between family members. The seed of love is planted, sprouted, and grown into a trunk, which abstractly represents the extension of life from the outside to the inner space of the home. The contours of the home are shaped by the atrium flooring, further emphasizing the idea of growth and extension.

One of the unique features of this design is the use of a two-story layout. The space is carefully planned to optimize functionality and create a harmonious flow between the different areas of the apartment. The design team, led by Sen Huang, the Creative Director, overcame challenges such as the original design having two stairs, which took up too much living space. By redesigning the flow, they were able to use a single staircase to access the second floor, maximizing the living area.

The Extend residential apartment project was completed in November 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan. The design has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2016. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that showcase outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
