Bean Buro's design for the Black Beans apartment is a testament to their ability to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and durable. The design was inspired by the need for a flexible and durable space that could accommodate the lifestyle of a young family. The apartment, located in the quieter villa community of Baguio Villa in Hong Kong, provides a serene environment close to the ocean, ideal for the family's expansion.
The apartment's unique features are its flexibility and durability. The design includes a pair of children's rooms that can either be connected to form one large playroom or partitioned into individual rooms. The rooms can also be separated from the lounge and dining area by a concealed sliding door, providing an acoustic separation that ensures quietness during adult gatherings. These features make the apartment adaptable to various needs and activities.
Another standout feature of the Black Beans apartment is its innovative use of materials. The walls in the children's rooms are coated with a strengthened paint finish that increases surface resistance, while the floors are covered with high-quality European ceramic tiles that mimic the texture of timber, providing a natural appearance while being resistant to stains and scratches.
The design also includes a long, continuous curvy wall that serves as a high-density storage wall, connecting the entrance foyer, lounge, dining area, and kitchen. The master bedroom features a unique spatial arrangement that partitions the walk-in wardrobe and dressing space from the bed area with a half-height partition and a transparent glass wall, preserving the openness of the room.
The Black Beans project represents a fresh solution to integrating innovative ideas in a humanistic manner. It addresses the complex relationships between the members of a growing family while responding to the external wavy mountains and the calming nature of the ocean villa. The design also successfully balances the husband's preference for dark black colours with the wife's liking for softer muted colours, resulting in a colour scheme composed of neutral tiling colours, muted green joinery colours, and black metal details.
Bean Buro's Black Beans apartment design is a testament to the firm's commitment to creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and adaptable. The project's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award underscores the firm's expertise in creating remarkable designs that showcase a high level of excellence and innovation.
