Discovery and Exploration: A New Dimension in Exhibition Space

Biwei Zhu's Innovative Approach to Presenting Historical Artifacts

The exhibition space, located in Shaanxi, is home to the latest archaeological findings in the region. Despite the limited space, Biwei Zhu has ingeniously designed the exhibit to allow audiences to feel the charm of archaeological discoveries and understand the results of archaeological research in Shaanxi. The uniqueness of this project lies not in its design, but in its ability to provide a new experience for the historical and cultural heritage.

The realization of this design involved a lot of sketches and drawings for the combined display of different implements. To ensure stability and safety, fixed structures of different sizes were designed and manufactured by professional technicians. These structures, made of copper material, were then installed on site, creating a 485 square meter exhibition space with a height of 2.7 meters.

The design is characterized by the use of modern techniques to deduce the continuous history and culture, while seeking a sense of order and the mixing of multiple levels of visual impact. This intensive display design, created in a limited space, completes the artistic expression of space. The core of the design research was proportion and scale. The designer used a 10*10CM and 30*30CM grid as visual language in space, allowing people to perceive the scale relationship of various cultural relics in such a dense display space.

One of the challenges faced in the design process was how to show the best effect of cultural relics, which vary in size, variety, and weight, in an appropriate way. To solve this problem, different types of fixed copper structures were designed and processed over a month. Another challenge was how to fix about 150 bronze mirrors, ceramic and tiles on the wall safely and aesthetically. The solution was the integration of the visual grid application into the design.

The project, which started in August 2018 and finished in October 2018 in Xi'an City, has been awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
