The distinctive shape of iLiv@Grange is a result of the intersection of two elliptical fuses, reminiscent of Matisse's 'Blue Nude.' While the marketing of the building suggested inspiration from the Calla lily, the design actually draws from the curves and sensuality of the female body. This organic form not only complements the interiors but also neutralizes the building's scale disadvantage compared to its neighboring structures.
One of the key strengths of iLiv@Grange is its ability to offer a diverse range of living spaces. Each floor plate is different, ensuring that every apartment is unique. The building consists of maisonettes, three-bedroom and studio apartments, as well as two penthouses, each with its own curving pool. The apartments range in size from approximately 102 to 325 square meters, providing ample space for residents to enjoy.
The external perimeters of the elliptical stacks vary, creating a visually intriguing facade. Expressed curved ribs lead the eye upwards, while a horizontal lattice of brown louvres provides privacy and sunscreening. The first three storeys of the building cantilever out, creating a dynamic canopy for the porte cochère and giving residents the feeling of being surrounded by nature.
Mercurio Design Lab's philosophy of unity between interior and exterior form is evident in iLiv@Grange. The building's sculptural presence is continued inside, ensuring constant visual stimulation. The integration of art and architecture is exemplified by a commissioned sculpture at the entrance, marking the beginning of MDL's unique practice of combining design, art, and architecture.
Efficiency and sustainability were also key considerations in the realization of iLiv@Grange. The glass facade is protected from direct sunlight, and energy-efficient glazing reduces glare and heat gain. The apartments are shaded by curving extruded terraces, and the common areas are naturally ventilated and lit. Recycled timber is used in the interior spaces, further enhancing the sustainable design.
Despite the numerous challenges faced during the design process, Mercurio Design Lab successfully created a building that stands out while harmonizing with its surroundings. The constraints of the site and the demand for increased floor space led to creative solutions, resulting in a building that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
iLiv@Grange, with its sculptural form and unique living spaces, offers residents a truly exceptional lifestyle. It is a testament to Mercurio Design Lab's commitment to pushing boundaries and creating designs that are both innovative and timeless.
