Fisher Studio: A Sculptural Retreat for Artistic Expression

Located on a lush property, the Fisher Studio seamlessly integrates with the existing home, creating a harmonious relationship between the two structures. The vision behind this project was to design a building that would not only inspire the client's creativity but also reflect the expansion of creative freedom without interfering with his work.

One of the standout features of the Fisher Studio is its sculptural form, which sets it apart from the traditional architecture in the region. The building's design is both visually striking and environmentally sensitive, showcasing Ewbank's commitment to sustainable design.

The Fisher Studio is clad entirely in American Red Cedar, giving it a warm and natural aesthetic. The building incorporates various eco-friendly features, including 100% daylighting, LED light sources, solar panels, skylights, and a tankless hot water heater. These elements work together to minimize energy consumption and create a space that is both comfortable and environmentally responsible.

Inside the studio, the main volume houses a prep-room and a spacious studio/gallery area, allowing for the creation and exhibition of large paintings. The high ceilings and ample floor area provide the artist with the necessary space to work and view their artwork from a distance. The second volume features a lower ceiling and encompasses the artist's study, lounge, and a full bathroom, creating a separate area for relaxation and contemplation.

The Fisher Studio also prioritizes the interaction between the architecture and the surrounding gardens. Wraparound decks and hidden entrances encourage a sense of discovery, inviting visitors to engage with the building and its natural surroundings. The integration of the building with the landscape was carefully considered, creating a courtyard and interconnected gardens that enhance the overall artistic experience.

The project, which started in June 2014 and was completed in June 2015, has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2016, acknowledging its innovative and practical approach to architecture and construction.
