Heyuan: A Modern Interpretation of Hakka Architecture

Bringing Traditional History and Culture to Modern China

The Heyuan New Library, designed by Paul Bo Peng, is a unique architectural masterpiece inspired by the traditional architecture of the Hakka people, one of the largest cultural groups in Southern China.

The Heyuan New Library, located in the center of the Heyuan Cultural Park in Guangdong Province, China, stands as a testament to the fusion of traditional history and modern design. Inspired by the architectural elements of the Hakka people, the library pays homage to their rich cultural heritage. The design team, led by Paul Bo Peng, sought to create a space that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation, while providing a functional and visually stunning environment for visitors.

The essence of the design lies in the arrangement of five functional blocks on a sloping terrain, overlooking the central lake and connecting land to water. The exterior elevations feature textured concrete panels with tall narrow windows on the front, reminiscent of the traditional Hakka architecture. The side elevations showcase patterned bricks, further embodying the essence of the Hakka culture. This unique configuration not only captures the spirit of the Hakka people but also promotes passive energy saving and sustainability.

While the external elevations exude a sense of solidity and tradition, the internal elevations facing the inner courtyard are open and flooded with natural light. The windows are a combination of clear glass and shade panels made from treated bamboo. This choice of materials not only pays homage to the Hakka people's affinity for bamboo but also creates a modern aesthetic that seamlessly blends tradition and contemporary design.

The Heyuan New Library is not just a building; it is a cultural hub that invites the community and visitors to immerse themselves in literature, knowledge, and nature. Situated in the picturesque Heyuan Cultural Park, the library offers a serene and inspiring environment for learning and exploration.

The project, which began in 2010 with the architectural design, took shape between 2013 and 2017. The Heyuan New Library has garnered recognition for its innovative design and cultural significance. In 2018, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the library's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements.

The Heyuan New Library stands as a symbol of the harmonious coexistence of tradition and modernity. It is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between the past and the present, and to create spaces that inspire and enrich the lives of those who experience them.
