Anna House - Listed Private Home

Transforming a Historic House into a Luxurious Family Home

The design was inspired by the challenge to combine the strict historic features of the original building and the modern day to day needs of a family. All the new design elements and materials are carefully chosen to create the marriage between old and new.

This is a 2 storey listed house in the centre of Limassol which has been transformed into a luxurious family home for a young couple and their children. The contemporary transformation has all living spaces on the ground floor which are arranged around a central courtyard pool area. The use of such modern interventions allows the interior to merge with the exterior through a series of large glazed openings. The exterior of the house has been restored to its original features with modern touches.

All the original floors were removed, restored, manufactured new in some cases, and repositioned according to the new layout of the house. The same process was applied to the exterior of the house, with the replacement and restoration of all the original stone cornices and balcony architraves.

The design team, led by Vakis Hadjikyriacou, conducted extensive research on the existing history of the property and its original architectural features. During the early months of construction, they uncovered the footprint of another (more historic) house, which was carefully restored and made into a feature in the main living room and dining room areas, covering the timber floor with glass vitrines.

One of the biggest challenges faced during the design process was developing an "anti-vandal" paint for the exterior of the house. Located in a busy part of Limassol Old town, the exterior of the house is constantly exposed to vandalism. The design team developed a vandal-proof finish during the design testing stage, which allows chemical paints such as spray paint to be easily removed with just the application of a sponge and water.

The Anna House project took 1.5 years of design and development, followed by 2 years of construction. The result is a stunning private residence that seamlessly blends historic charm with modern luxury.

This design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. The award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Anna House design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
