Parasitic plants, unable to produce their own nutrients, rely on other plants to survive. They connect their roots to the internal system of a host plant and extract vital fluids. Taking inspiration from this unique relationship, Parasita consists of two distinct objects that interact with each other, creating an innovative and easy-to-maintain plant container.
The main component of Parasita is a cement piece that acts as the plant container. Its design ensures that the soil remains consistently moist, making it easier to care for the plants. The second component is a glass piece that serves as the host, providing a visually appealing backdrop for the plant. The interaction between these two elements generates an optical illusion, reinforcing the concept of parasitism.
The production process of Parasita involves carving a model in Hebel, creating a mold using silicon, and casting cement into the mold. This meticulous craftsmanship ensures the highest quality and attention to detail in each piece.
Upon receiving Parasita, users are presented with a unique experience. The package includes soil and seeds, which the user fills the cement piece with. The next step is to place the cement piece inside the glass host. Slowly filling the container with water triggers changes in the graphic composition, creating a captivating visual effect. Observing Parasita from different angles enhances the interaction and allows users to appreciate the beauty of the design.
Designed and realized in Monterrey, Mexico, Parasita is the result of extensive research and creative exploration. Csar Llanos was inspired by the concept of parasitic plants and their interaction with other living beings. This idea resonated with him, reflecting certain behaviors observed in society.
Overcoming creative and technical challenges, such as translating the initial concept into a tangible design, Csar Llanos successfully created Parasita. The unique combination of form and function, along with the captivating visual effects, sets this plant container apart from traditional options.
Parasita has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2016. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated by Parasita. The design showcases a remarkable level of excellence and evokes positive emotions, amazement, and wonder.
Parasita, with its thought-provoking concept and visually stunning execution, is a testament to the power of nature-inspired design. It serves as a reminder of the intricate relationships found in the natural world and the beauty that can arise from these interactions.
