The glass used in Cassiopeia is not only industrial waste but also recycled glass, giving it a unique character and purpose. By utilizing impure glass material that would otherwise end up in a landfill, Majuri highlights the potential of recycling and the transformative power of glass. Each sculpture is made from mouth-blown studio glass and shaped by hand, ensuring that every piece is one-of-a-kind.
Measuring 150 cm x 50 cm x 30 cm, Cassiopeia stands as a poetic interpretation of the weightless yet strong nature of glass. It invites viewers to contemplate the deepness of the universe through the lenses of a telescope and explore the intricate details of the microscopic world.
The design philosophy behind Cassiopeia is to create a harmonious balance between strong and organic shapes. The rough and bumpy glass domes are delicately illuminated, creating a mesmerizing landscape-like installation. The sculpture interacts with light, showcasing the play between transparency and opacity, fragility and resilience.
Cassiopeia made its debut at the Venice Glass Week in 2020, captivating audiences with its ethereal beauty and thought-provoking message. Through this design, Majuri aims to raise awareness about the potential of recycled glass and inspire others to see the value in materials that are often overlooked.
Recognized for its creative ingenuity, Cassiopeia was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
With Cassiopeia, Sini Majuri has created a masterpiece that not only showcases the beauty of recycled glass but also serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art and design.
