The Wave Mural, completed in October 2017, is a testament to Thu Thuy's creativity and vision. Made up of nearly 300,000 little ceramic mosaic tiles, the mural depicts powerful waves that give the entire installation a sense of unity and wholeness. The aesthetic effects of the mural are truly captivating, inspiring visitors from the moment they lay eyes on it.
The process of creating the Wave Mural was a labor of love. Thu Thuy and her team produced the ceramic mosaic tiles in various colors and sizes. They then enlarged the sketch of the mural and meticulously assembled the mosaic on the floor of their studio. Once the pieces were ready, they were carefully transported to the Mirror House and affixed to the wall using glue cement. Metal brushes were used to clean the surface and ensure the connected lines between the pieces were seamless. The final step involved adding colors to the slots and giving the mural a thorough cleaning.
What sets the Wave Mural apart is not only its size and intricate design, but also the unique techniques used in its creation. Thu Thuy employed special methods of ceramic mosaic making, resulting in rectangular tiles measuring 2x4 cm. Each square meter of the mural contains an impressive 1,200 mosaic tiles. The ability to replicate the tones and textures of oil paintings in ceramic form is a testament to Thu Thuy's skill and innovation.
The Wave Mural serves a greater purpose beyond its artistic value. Thu Thuy's intention was to promote the beauty of Vietnam's seascape and instill a sense of love and protection for the sea in visitors. The mural's depiction of powerful waves evokes a feeling of awe and unity, transforming the once dull and damp wall into a vibrant and captivating artistic masterpiece. Since its completion, the mural has become a beloved tourist destination in Hanoi, drawing visitors from all over the world.
The creation of the Wave Mural was not without its challenges. Convincing the Hanoi authorities to approve the design and allocate the necessary budget was the first hurdle. Additionally, the weather posed a significant obstacle during the mural-making process. Thu Thuy and her team worked tirelessly under the scorching sun and heavy rain, using large canvases to protect the surface of the mural when the cement glue was still wet. Despite these challenges, they managed to complete the project on time, thanks to their dedication and perseverance.
The Wave Mural, adorning the exterior wall of the Mirror House in Hanoi's Reunion Park, is a testament to the power of art to transform spaces and captivate audiences. As visitors approach the Mirror House, they are greeted by shimmering waves that create a sense of mist from the ocean. The mural's 300,000 ceramic mosaic tiles come together to form a cohesive and mesmerizing installation, leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter it.
The Wave Mural by Nguyen Thu Thuy is a true masterpiece, showcasing the artist's talent and creativity. Its recognition extends beyond the streets of Hanoi, as it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the mural's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, as well as its contribution to the art and design world.
