Cozi Studio's "Infinity": A Dance of Wood in Mid-Air

Golden A' Design Award Winner Transforms Pressed Wood into Fluid Art

The design, reminiscent of a ribbon gymnast's dance frozen in mid-air, is a result of precise geometrical joints that create a fluid continuous form out of numerous pieces of pressed bent wood. The entire element, made of only two different basic shapes attached together multiple times in several orientations, is suspended from the ceiling using 1mm thin metal wires, allowing the wooden surface to float as far as 10.5 meters away from the wall.

Infinity is made of pressed wood veneers. To design this organic flow curve, a physical model was hand-made and then 3D scanned to create a file base, maintaining a handcrafted feel to the object. After CNC milling the mold, thin wood veneers layered with glue were pressed against each other to create the "building blocks" that later formed the object.

The project was designed and built between February and April 2021, specifically for a furniture shop's interior design. Suspended 4 meters off the floor, Infinity covers an area roughly 4 meters wide and 10.5 meters long, with each single pressed wooden piece being 1 meter long and 6 mm thick.

Walking around and underneath Infinity, one feels drawn into the tangled wooden curve. The object gives the impression of being in continuous motion, a testament to the design team's ability to bring static materials to life. The team, consisting of Ofir Zandani and Yuval Carmel, has successfully created a piece that not only serves as an interior element but also as a captivating art installation.
