The SuiTable stands out with its sustainable and dynamic form. Park applied traditional basketry patterns and techniques, specifically Twining Basketry, to construct the form. This approach allows for greater flexibility and curvature, resulting in an organic shape that mimics the beauty of nature. The transparency and lightness of the SuiTable further enhance its resemblance to organic forms.
Measuring at 700mm (W) x 650mm (D) x 330mm (H), the SuiTable is not only visually striking but also functional. It can be used as a table or ottoman, making it a versatile addition to any interior. Additionally, the SuiTable can be displayed as a light pendant, adding an artistic touch to the ceiling.
The creation of the SuiTable involved extensive research and experimentation. Park explored the incorporation of analog techniques, such as basketry, into modern digital fabrication processes. By applying basketry as a modular unit or even as a structural element, Park showcases the potential of this traditional craft in architecture and furniture design.
One of the challenges Park faced was finding the right materials to achieve the desired organic forms. After experimenting with various options, Park found that fishing lines provided the perfect combination of transparency, flexibility, and sustainability. The handmade nature of the SuiTable also presented a challenge in terms of production time. Streamlining the production process would allow for larger-scale versions of the SuiTable and more diverse forms and functions.
The SuiTable has garnered recognition for its innovative design. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
With its sustainable and dynamic form, the SuiTable by Sui Park offers a unique way to bring the beauty of nature into our everyday lives. Its organic shape and innovative use of traditional techniques make it a standout piece in the world of design.
