The Ceramics Extension art installation, created by designers Tairan Hao and Shan Xu, is a captivating blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Comprising a total of 130 sculptures, the installation showcases the seamless integration of handmade ceramics and 3D printed plastic sculptures. The sculptures are displayed in a space surrounded by reflective glass mirrors, illuminated by five LED lights, creating a fantastical and futuristic ambiance.
The installation aims to explore the communication between the past and the future, traditional handicraft and modern technology, and the real world and the virtual world. As viewers step into the installation space, they are enveloped in a sense of visual infinity. The interplay between the sculptures and the mirrors creates a captivating interaction, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. Some objects appear tangible and real, while others are mere reflections, challenging the viewers' perception of what is genuine.
The realization of the Ceramics Extension installation involved a combination of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. Half of the sculptures were meticulously handmade, showcasing the skill and artistry of the artists. The other half were created using 3D printing, allowing for intricate and precise designs. The choice of materials, including plastic, aluminum mirrors, porcelain, and LED lights, was crucial in achieving the desired visual effect.
Throughout the design process, the arrangement of the sculptures posed a challenge. Some of the ceramics were too heavy to be suspended with ropes, necessitating the use of lighter materials for 3D printing. The sculptures were then coated with a glazed-look white finish to maintain the desired aesthetic. The result is a harmonious composition that seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary elements.
The Ceramics Extension installation made its debut at the Beijing Today Art Museum in 2017, captivating audiences with its mesmerizing visual experience. The project, which began in 2016, showcases the designers' dedication to pushing the boundaries of art and design. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, Hao and Xu have created an immersive environment that challenges viewers' perceptions and invites them to explore the intersection of the real and the virtual.
The Ceramics Extension installation received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2020. This recognition highlights the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which seamlessly merges art, science, design, and technology. The installation not only showcases technical and creative prowess but also contributes to enhancing the quality of life, making it a truly remarkable and thought-provoking work of art.
