Mini Well: The Intraocular Lens Revolutionizing Vision Correction

Enhancing Visual Outcomes and Quality of Life

Mini Well is an innovative intraocular lens (IOL) designed by Sifi Medtech R&D to correct presbyopia and improve the visual performance of patients after cataract surgery.

Presbyopia, an age-related condition affecting near vision, has long been a challenge for patients undergoing cataract surgery. Traditional solutions often require compromises, such as the need for reading glasses. However, Mini Well offers a modern solution that allows patients to regain their visual independence and enhance their quality of life.

Mini Well's unique design is inspired by recent discoveries in optical science, specifically the use of aberrations to improve progressive optical performance without compromising the modern lifestyle of middle-aged individuals. By changing the optical properties of the pupil, Mini Well achieves efficient progressive visual performance.

The key to Mini Well's success lies in its wavefront engineering-based approach, which induces wavefront spherical aberrations in both the central and peripheral pupil sections. This innovative design concept turns the concept of aberrations from negative to positive, resulting in an extended depth of focus and enhanced visual outcomes.

Manufactured using hydrogel material, Mini Well IOLs are produced through a process of lathing and cutting. They are then hydrated and supplied in a sterile preloaded system for lens injection. The package includes a specific loading chamber and injector, ensuring a seamless and precise insertion into the eye.

With an optical biconvex profile and a dioptric range between 30D and 0D, Mini Well IOLs offer a versatile solution for presbyopic patients. The lens has an optic diameter of 6 mm, a total diameter of 10.75 mm, and haptics angle of 5°.

Mini Well's impact goes beyond technical specifications. Patients implanted with Mini Well experience a significant improvement in their quality of life. They can read, watch TV, use computers and mobile devices without the need for glasses. The enhanced visual outcomes provided by Mini Well promote social integration and allow patients to fully engage in their daily activities.

The development of Mini Well has been a result of extensive research and collaboration. The Sifi Medtech R&D team, led by Maria Cristina Curatolo and Elena Anastasi, worked closely with consultant Jhunzong Liang to bring this innovative design to life. The project spanned two years and took place at Sifi Medtech facilities in Lavianio, Catania.

Mini Well's technology harnesses the power of wavefront aberrations in a smart and efficient way. By inducing wavefront aberrations of opposite signs in the central pupil section, Mini Well achieves an extended depth of focus, providing patients with a continuum of vision from far to near.

The development of Mini Well was not without its challenges. The project represented a commitment to biomedical research in Italy and required collaboration with reputable international partners. The Sifi Medtech team ensured compliance with the highest international standards, employing modern manufacturing processes and leveraging expertise in mechanotronics optics and biomaterials.

Mini Well's success and innovation have been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award. In 2016, Mini Well was awarded the Bronze A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award. This award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.

Mini Well is not just an intraocular lens; it is a game-changer in vision correction. With its unique design and focus on enhancing visual outcomes and quality of life, Mini Well is revolutionizing the way we approach presbyopia after cataract surgery.
