Spacial Spot: Exploring the Possibilities of Space

A Unique Design Project by Qimeng Han

The inspiration for the Spacial Spot design came from Foucault's "Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias." Qimeng Han, the designer, observed the relationships between space consumers and place producers, which led to the exploration of space strategy and tactics. The project aims to uncover the numerous possibilities that exist within a space and challenge the invisible rules set by the producers.

Every place has its boundaries, allowing people to appreciate the near and far. Qimeng Han delves into how social experiences overlap and co-produce the elements of city life. Through extensive research in London, the designer utilized various methods such as sound recording, prototyping, and videotaping to capture the structures and processes that shape different places.

The Spacial Spot design was realized using 3D sketching to develop the concept of space. The colors of the space spot were inspired by the sounds recorded in the street. Additionally, double exposure techniques were employed to document street elements, buildings, and people's actions. A stop motion video was created to analyze the history of the place.

The design specifications include an A3-sized poster, a 210mm x 210mm booklet, and a 60-second stop motion video. The booklet serves as a platform for people to question and share their ideas on how to utilize facilities and spaces. This information is then collected to create a network of people's interactions with space.

The Spacial Spot project took place from September to November 2015 at Goldsmiths, University of London, with research conducted around Paternoster Square. Qimeng Han's research encompassed three main aspects: history, theory, and practice. The designer explored the geographical structure and activities of people in the area, delved into theoretical research based on the works of Michel de Certeau and Foucault, and employed various methods such as photography, prototyping, and videotaping to capture the essence of the space.

Creating the Spacial Spot in the street presented challenges in summarizing and reflecting people's activities over time, as well as connecting space theory with reality. However, Qimeng Han successfully overcame these challenges to create a vibrant and engaging design that highlights the importance of social experiences in shaping our cities.

The Spacial Spot design by Qimeng Han was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
