En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant, designed by UDP, is a unique space that combines Chinese and Western influences to create a fresh and contemporary atmosphere. The name "En Vain," which means "in vain" in French, reflects the playful attitude of the design, as the team aims to reinterpret Chinese cultural elements in a way that is both respectful of its historical context and appealing to a modern audience.
The interior of En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant is a testament to UDP's attention to detail and creativity. Every aspect of the space, from the branding and graphic motifs to the furniture and lighting, was meticulously designed by the team. The use of traditional Chinese elements, such as windows found in traditional houses, adds a touch of authenticity, while the upside-down tables housing downlights and 3D rendered calligraphic paintings bring a modern twist.
One of the key challenges faced by UDP was integrating different design styles into a cohesive whole. The team successfully combined contemporary elements with traditional cultural references, creating a space that is both Chinese and Western in its expression. The use of a neutral color palette with bright accents inspired by Chinese traditions, such as opera costumes, further enhances the unique atmosphere of En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant.
The overall experience at En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant is a layered one. At first glance, it appears to be a bar with Chinese elements, housed in an industrial language with contemporary detailing. However, upon closer inspection, the disruptive play of traditional elements and the recurring graphic motif, seen in the branding, wallpaper, screens, and paintings, reveal a modern interpretation of Chinese wine culture.
En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant is not just a bar; it is a statement about modern Chinese design and culture. By reinterpreting traditional elements in a fresh and respectful manner, UDP has created a space that attracts a consumer base obsessed with the cutting edge and trendy. This design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Silver A' Design Award in 2016.
En Vain Baijiu Bar & Restaurant is a testament to the creativity and expertise of UDP. By reinventing Chinese wine culture, UDP has successfully created a space that is both unique and appealing to the young and fashionable. This design is a prime example of how Chinese cultural elements can be interpreted in a fresh and modern manner, while still honoring their historical context.
