Adda: A Multifunctional Cafe that Combines Work and Play

A Collaborative Space Designed by Ketan Jawdekar

Adda, a local Indian term for a meeting place or hangout joint, inspired the creation of a unique and interactive space where like-minded individuals can gather, socialize, and collaborate. Designed by Ketan Jawdekar, Adda is a multifunctional cafe, workspace, and bar that caters to the needs of startups, entrepreneurs, and creative minds.

Adda is not just your typical cafe. It seamlessly combines the functions of a co-working space, a meeting place, and a hangout joint. The design concept blends retro elements with contemporary aesthetics, creating a nostalgic yet fresh ambiance. Antique displays, a library of old comic books, and a blackboard contribute to the nostalgic touch, while a palette of pastel colors and eclectic furniture adds a sense of vibrancy to the premises.

The design of Adda prioritizes natural light and ventilation. The composition of antique windows on the exterior wall allows natural light to penetrate through stained glasses, creating different moods at different times of the day. The use of decorative ceramic tiles highlights different floor areas, while the exposed ceiling with round AC ducts adds an industrial touch.

The furniture in Adda is designed to adapt to various activities. It is lightweight and eclectic, allowing patrons to easily rearrange the space according to their needs. Vertical planes made out of slotted angles, raw pinewood, and a blackboard serve as displays and provide a creative outlet for visitors.

Located on the first floor of a commercial establishment, Adda occupies a space of 17800 mm x 10000 mm x 3500 mm. Its strategic location, surrounded by restaurants and corporate offices, makes it a convenient meeting point for professionals from various fields.

Operated as a multifunctional cafe and bar, Adda caters to different needs throughout the day. During working hours, it functions as a co-working space, providing a conducive environment for startups and entrepreneurs to collaborate. In the evenings, it transforms into a celebration place, where friends can gather, enjoy dice games, cards, and mind games, all while sipping on beer or working on their laptops.

The Adda project started in October 2015 and was completed in December 2015. The design team, led by Ketan Jawdekar, included associate designer Rohan Lomte. The design concept was driven by the idea of creating an emotional and connecting space, reminiscent of the old school days that hold a special place in the hearts of many.

The unique design of Adda has garnered recognition and accolades. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

Experience the charm of Adda, where work and play seamlessly blend together, creating a space that fosters collaboration, creativity, and connection.
