Icy: A Stylish and Minimalistic Ice Cream Bowl

Bringing Together Form and Function

Icy is an innovative ice cream serving dish set designed by Heloise Rajkumari. Inspired by the separation of ice cream bowls and spoons in traditional serving methods, Icy aims to bring all the elements together in a stylish and minimalistic way. With its highly refractive faceted crystal design and a magnetic base, Icy provides a unique and elegant serving experience.

The idea for Icy came to Heloise Rajkumari while dining at a restaurant. She noticed that ice cream was served in a typical bowl, while the spoons were placed on a separate plate. This separation sparked her curiosity and led her to question why these elements were treated separately when they were meant to be together. This inspired her to design Icy, a serving dish that combines the bowl, plate, and spoon into one cohesive unit.

What sets Icy apart from traditional ice cream bowls is its magnetic base. The base is designed to hold the spoon in place, making it an integral part of the serving dish. This eliminates the need for separate plates or cloths to hold the spoon. The magnetic attraction keeps the spoon intact and stable while carrying and serving the ice cream, enhancing the overall elegance of the experience.

Icy's design is characterized by highly refractive faceted crystals, giving the perception of chill, cold, and transparent ice pieces. The crystals come in three different shapes - conical, princess, and marquise - adding a touch of sophistication to the serving dish. The crystals are placed on top of the magnetic base, providing stability and preventing them from slipping.

The materials used in the production of Icy include aluminum, crystal glass, 18/0 stainless steel, and Sm2Co17 magnets. Aluminum is chosen for its low relative magnetic permeability, allowing the magnetic field to pass through the thin base. The Sm2Co17 magnets are used due to their high Curie temperature, ensuring that they maintain their magnetic properties even at the high temperature of the aluminum casting process.

With its unique design and functionality, Icy offers a new and elegant way to serve ice cream. It combines form and function, creating a visually appealing and practical serving dish. The magnetic base and refractive crystals elevate the serving experience, making it more sophisticated and enjoyable.

Icy was designed and realized by Heloise Rajkumari in Bangalore, India, from October 2015 to February 2016. The design process involved extensive research on materials that do not shield magnetic fields and magnets with high Curie temperature. Overcoming the challenge of selecting the right materials was crucial to the success of the magnetic base.

Icy has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2016. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Icy's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
