Electron: A Luminary Innovation Inspired by Subatomic Particles

Maurice Dery & Jordan Dery's Electron Wall Sconce: A Fusion of Art, Science, and Design

Electron, a luminaire wall sconce, is a unique design inspired by the subatomic particle, the electron. This innovative lighting fixture, designed by Maurice Dery & Jordan Dery, blends modern aesthetics with advanced engineering, reflecting the image and nature of its namesake.

The Electron Wall sconce is a wall-mounted LED luminaire for indoor use. Its design is simplistic yet modern and futuristic, enabled by LED lighting technology. This unique design not only adds aesthetic value but also promotes energy efficiency. The inspiration for this design came from the electron's nature in physics - radiating energy in the form of protons when accelerated. The designers have successfully translated this scientific concept into a beautiful, functional piece of art.

The Electron is made using aluminum sheet, aluminum shafting, and frosted acrylic sheet. The materials are cut using an OMAX waterjet machining center and processed further using a CNC milling machine and lathe. The aluminum parts are then given a brushed finish and anodized in silver, black, or gold. A dimmable 12V LED strip serves as the source of illumination, making the Electron not just a design marvel but also an energy-efficient lighting solution.

The Electron is more than just a lighting fixture; it's a testament to the designers' innovative approach. The design process involved overcoming several challenges, including developing a continuous path within the acrylic diffuser for the LED strips and finding a way to hide the fasteners. The result is a light with clean, finished lines and no exposed fasteners, reflecting the designers' objective to create a light that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional.

The Electron wall sconce represents the circular path of an electron around the nucleus of an atom. This minimalistic aesthetic masks a highly innovative creation. The efficient engineering hides all fasteners and wiring, maintaining the ring's suspended independence without compromising beauty or functionality. Using dimmable energy-efficient LED technology, it illuminates from its inner and outer edges without shadowing.

The Electron's design and manufacturing were completed at the designers' facility in Surrey, BC, Canada, with preliminary designs and prototypes beginning in October 2015. The final prototype was made in December 2015. This design was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2016, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.

The Electron is a shining example of how art, science, and design can come together to create something truly unique and beautiful. It's a testament to the designers' creativity and technical skill, and a shining example of what can be achieved when art and science come together.
