The diptych consists of two parts: Symmetry I and Symmetry II. Both works are meticulously crafted colored pencil drawings on Arches 300gsm paper, measuring an impressive 114cm x 114cm. The use of colored pencils adds depth and richness to the portraits, bringing the characters to life on the paper.
What sets Symmetry part I&II apart from other artworks is its inspiration from solid state physics. Noppen studied the patterns of the Fibonacci crystal or quasicrystal, which are models used to study systems with aperiodic structure in the field of solid state physics. By incorporating elements of this pattern into the drawing, Noppen creates a visual representation of the symmetry between the two men, binding them together in a harmonious yet contrasting manner.
One of the challenges Noppen faced while creating this diptych was maintaining the essence of the characters while working on a larger-than-life scale. When drawing or painting a portrait larger than life size, the brain tends to lose track of size and proportion. However, Noppen skillfully overcame this challenge, ensuring that the essence of the characters shines through in the final artwork.
To fully appreciate Symmetry part I&II, the two parts should be hung next to each other, with a few centimeters of separation. Symmetry I should be placed on the left side, while Symmetry II should be placed on the right side. This arrangement allows viewers to experience the contrasting yet interconnected nature of the two portraits.
With its captivating portrayal of opposite symmetry and exploration of hidden desires, Symmetry part I&II stands as a testament to Daan Noppen's artistic prowess and his ability to merge art and science. The diptych invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of human relationships and the interplay between physics and our emotions. It is a truly remarkable piece that deserves recognition and admiration.
