BuddyPhones InFlight: Kids Headphones Designed for Safety and Sharing

Travel-friendly headphones with volume control for little travelers

Traveling with kids can be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping them entertained and comfortable. That's why Petur Hannes Olafsson, the designer behind BuddyPhones InFlight, created headphones specifically designed for young travelers. These innovative headphones not only provide a safe listening experience but also allow children to share their audio devices with ease.

The inspiration for BuddyPhones InFlight came from the chaotic situations that often arise when traveling with children. Olafsson wanted to create headphones that could withstand being crammed into backpacks and handle noisy environments, such as airplanes. The result is a set of headphones that offer a three-volume setting of 75db, 85db, and 94db, allowing parents to control the volume depending on the environment.

One of the unique features of BuddyPhones InFlight is the volume limiting circuitry that caps at 85db, as recommended by the World Health Organization for kids. This ensures that children's hearing is protected while still allowing them to enjoy their favorite audio content. The three volume settings cater to different needs, with 94db suitable for louder situations and 75db ideal for children with sensitive hearing, attention deficits, or autism.

Durability and comfort were also key considerations in the design of BuddyPhones InFlight. The headphones are made from robust materials, including an ABS housing and a headband made of specially calibrated polypropylene that bends. The soft ear pads provide a comfortable fit, and the foldable handles make them easy to pack and travel with. Additionally, the headphones can be adjusted to fit different head sizes.

One of the standout features of BuddyPhones InFlight is the BuddyCable, which allows up to four headphones to connect to one device. This built-in audio splitter enables children to share their audio experience with friends, eliminating any squabbles over who gets to listen. The headphones also come with a detachable cord that plugs out of the headphones if pulled, reducing the risk of entanglement.

The design and functionality of BuddyPhones InFlight were the result of extensive research and testing. The project started in June 2015 and was completed in February 2016 in Hong Kong. During the development process, the headphones were given to 20 children aged 3 to 13 who were traveling by air. The feedback from both the children and their parents was overwhelmingly positive, with the kids enjoying the ability to share their devices and drown out the noise, while parents appreciated the volume control for different situations.

BuddyPhones InFlight has received recognition for its innovative design. The headphones were awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids, and Children's Products category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The BuddyPhones InFlight design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.

With BuddyPhones InFlight, Petur Hannes Olafsson has created a solution for parents and children alike. These travel-friendly headphones prioritize safety, comfort, and sharing, making them an ideal choice for young travelers.
