Janus: A Specialized Material Handler Excavator for Future Workspaces

Increasing Maneuverability and Safety in Material Handling

From the mind of designer Ufuk Seçgel, Janus is a revolutionary material handler excavator that aims to redefine the future of workspaces in the recycling industry. With its unique design and specialized features, Janus offers increased maneuverability and safety, making it the perfect solution for narrow roads and hangars.

The inspiration for Janus came from a desire to see material handler excavators as more than just construction machines. After extensive research on the recycling industry and its future, Seçgel concluded that these machines should be viewed as recyclers rather than mere construction equipment. This led to the development of a design that prioritizes maneuverability and the ability to navigate narrow roads in recycle stations or hangars.

What sets Janus apart from other material handler excavators is its focus on increasing maneuverability and safety. The vehicle's design breaks away from the standard excavator form, making it even more specialized for future workspaces. With zero blind spots, Janus can effortlessly maneuver through the narrow roads of scrapyards, ensuring maximum efficiency and safety.

Seçgel realized the vision for Janus by studying the future of junkyard workspaces and identifying the need for increased maneuverability. The vehicle features a unique split mode, with the cabin rotating to provide unobstructed visibility in driving mode. In working mode, the cabin is elevated for enhanced visibility, allowing operators to perform their tasks with ease.

Janus measures 3102mm x 9176mm x 3607mm and is equipped with a diesel engine, hydraulic pumps, control valve unit, reservoir, filters, hydraulic motors, swing motors, and batteries. These components work together seamlessly to ensure optimal performance and functionality.

The Janus design project began in September 2015 in Istanbul and was completed in January 2016. Throughout the process, Seçgel conducted extensive research, including reading articles and interviewing professionals in the recycling and material handling industry. This research provided valuable insights into the future of the industry and guided the design decisions for Janus.

One of the main challenges faced during the project was breaking free from the boundaries of standard work machine forms. Seçgel wanted to create a vehicle that would be seen as different and innovative by industry professionals. By pushing the limits of design and functionality, Janus successfully challenges the status quo.

Janus has received recognition for its exceptional design and practicality. In 2016, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Heavy Machinery Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while incorporating innovative features and industry best practices.

With its unique design, increased maneuverability, and focus on safety, Janus is set to revolutionize the material handling industry. This specialized material handler excavator is a testament to the power of innovative thinking and the potential for creating a better future.
