Harmony: A Fabric Design Inspired by La Sagrada Familia

Creating a Conjuncted Experience for the Eyes and the Body

The project started in September 2015 in London and finished in December 2015

This award-winning fabric design, named Harmony, is the brainchild of Aurelija Stanciukaite. Inspired by the iconic La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Stanciukaite sought to capture the temple's synergy of light and color in a textile that accentuates sunlight in a household environment.

The fabric is a woven sample, meticulously crafted using a cotton tie-dye warp and a monofilament weft. The real magic lies in the clear and colored acrylic rods that have been bent and shaped into various forms. These rods are then woven together with the monofilament, creating a perception of extended light and color that strikes the user and creates a spatial interaction.

Stanciukaite's design aims to go beyond the sensuality of tactile materials and instead provide a conjuncted experience for both the eyes and the body. The fabric can be hung, placed on a surface, wrapped around objects, or simply stand as an interior decorative feature.

Measuring 210mm x 300mm, the fabric's dimensions allow it to maintain its fragility and flexibility while also retaining intensity through the use of hard materials intersecting the cloth. This unique combination creates a delicate balance between strength and softness.

The journey to bring Harmony to life was not without its challenges. Constructing a woven fabric using 3D materials required careful manipulation to achieve the desired shape. Moreover, translating the personal experience of La Sagrada Familia's interior into a tangible material was a creative and technical hurdle that Stanciukaite successfully overcame.

Harmony has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With Harmony, Aurelija Stanciukaite has successfully captured the essence of La Sagrada Familia's interior and translated it into a fabric that not only adds beauty to any space but also creates a unique sensory experience for those who interact with it.
