Inspired by the captivating relationship between water and skin, Benedetta Covanti's Adriatico design captures the essence of this interplay. The digitally created waves on the fabric mirror the free-flowing nature of water, while also echoing the sensation of the fabric against the skin. The name Adriatico, derived from the Adriatic Sea, pays homage to the memories and experiences Covanti had while spending time on the Adriatic coast.
What sets Adriatico apart is its innovative use of digital printing technology on a heavyweight upholstery fabric. This breakthrough in the textile field allows for the creation of visually striking patterns that can withstand the demands of upholstery. To achieve the optimum visual effect, the saturation of the colors was carefully adjusted before the digital printing process. The fabric used in this design boasts an impressive rub count of 80,000, ensuring durability and longevity.
The realization of the Adriatico design involves digital printing on 100% polyester heavyweight upholstery fabric. The fabric itself has a thickness of 300 g/m2 and is 54 inches wide, providing ample material for various design applications.
With Adriatico, Covanti aims to inspire interior designers, architects, and creatives to think beyond conventional textiles and embrace the connection to organic elements. The bold and distinctive aesthetic of this textile design can transform interior spaces, creating environments that evoke a sense of inspiration and sophistication.
The development of Adriatico involved extensive research in the fields of color, aesthetics, and innovative materials. Prototypes were created using different textile bases, including silk, cotton, linen, and polyester. Through meticulous pattern experimentation, Covanti arrived at the ideal design with the perfect balance of scale, colorways, and repetition.
One of the creative challenges faced during the development of Adriatico was visually translating the theme of water and fluidity in an innovative and abstract manner. However, through Covanti's artistic vision and technical expertise, this challenge was overcome, resulting in a design that captures the essence of water in a visually captivating way.
Adriatico is a testament to Benedetta Covanti's creative prowess and commitment to pushing the boundaries of textile design. This project has garnered recognition and acclaim, earning the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design category in 2018. This award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
With Adriatico, Benedetta Covanti has created a textile design that not only showcases innovation and creativity but also celebrates the beauty and connection between water and skin. This unique design is a testament to the power of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology in enhancing our lifestyle and environment.
