Echelon: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Music

Concert Hall of Damghan: A Masterpiece by G.S.A Architectural Design Group

The Echelon, a concert hall designed by G.S.A Architectural Design group, is a unique blend of architecture and music. Inspired by the principles of contextualized architecture and the natural beauty of Badab-e Surt of Damghan, this design is a testament to the transformative power of design and innovation.

The Echelon stands out for its unique properties. The design imitates the superficial shell and order of its environment, creating a modest and humble approach. The building wraps around its occupants, its shape morphing into the form of music. It is a local geometry and mathematical music, a place where music can be seen and heard. The architecture is field-oriented, a tool that helps bring the music to fruition.

The realization of the Echelon involves innovative use of materials and structure. The walls and ceiling serve not just structural purposes, but also acoustic ones, acting as a real acoustic shell. The main hall has three levels: the main floor, a mezzanine floor, and a balcony, all protected from external noise by a two-shell structure. The original volume of the site is layered along the topographic layer, slowly transforming into space through a massive ramp.

The Echelon is a large-scale project, covering an area of 28000sqm, with 1500 seats and 400 parking spaces for cars. The stage is 30 meters from the farthest seat, with 1 meter between rows. The design process started in 2014, and the project is located in Damghan City, Iran.

The design of the Echelon was not without its challenges. Adapting the design to respect the context and choosing the right materials that were low-cost and easy to assemble on site were some of the difficulties faced. However, the design team overcame these challenges, creating a design that is not only visually stunning but also functional and contextually appropriate.

The Echelon project is a testament to the power of contextualized architecture. It creates a pleasant atmosphere and plays a decisive role in the urban ambience. The design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2016, a testament to its outstanding design and innovative approach.
