BooKend: A Stylish and Functional Book Organizer

Revolutionizing Desk Organization with 3D Printing Technology

The world of manufacturing is on the brink of a revolution, and designer Tong Jin (TJ) Kim is leading the way with his innovative creation, BooKend. This unique book organizer combines art, functionality, and the latest technology to transform the way we organize our desks.

In today's typical room environments, users often find themselves surrounded by various types of organizers, resulting in a visually messy workspace. BooKend aims to change that by providing a sleek and efficient solution. Inspired by the future of manufacturing and the potential of 3D printers, Kim set out to design a piece of furniture that would not only be visually appealing but also practical.

What sets BooKend apart from other book organizers is its integration of a built-in pocket for pens and pencils. This feature allows users to keep their essential writing tools within easy reach, eliminating the need for additional clutter on the desk. With BooKend, users can enjoy a clean and organized workspace without sacrificing functionality.

BooKend's production process is as innovative as its design. The 3D data for this book organizer can be downloaded by anyone in the 3D printer community, for a one-time fee. This allows users to customize their BooKend by choosing different sizes, colors, and materials. The possibilities are endless, ensuring that each BooKend is a unique and personalized piece.

With dimensions of 158mm width, 140mm depth, and 114mm height, BooKend is perfectly sized to hold a collection of books while still maintaining a compact form. Its sleek and modern design makes it a stylish addition to any workspace, whether it be a home office, a student's desk, or a professional environment.

The BooKend project began in May 2015 and was completed in August of the same year in West Lafayette, IN. It was later exhibited at the Purdue gallery in November 2015, where it garnered attention and praise for its innovative design and functionality.

Kim's design process for BooKend was informed by extensive ethnographic research. By studying student user behaviors and desk organization habits, Kim was able to identify the common problems faced by users and develop a solution that addressed those issues effectively.

Creating BooKend came with its fair share of challenges. With numerous desk organizers already on the market, Kim had to find a way to offer something new and unique to users. Additionally, working with a 3D printer presented its own set of limitations and technical hurdles. However, Kim's perseverance and creativity allowed him to overcome these challenges and bring BooKend to life.

BooKend has received widespread acclaim and recognition for its innovative design. In 2016, it was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. BooKend's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world earned it this esteemed accolade.

BooKend is a testament to the power of combining art, design, and technology. With its sleek aesthetics, practical functionality, and customizable options, BooKend is set to revolutionize desk organization and bring a touch of elegance to workspaces worldwide.
