Maroma: A Twist on Auxiliary Tables

Ana García and Karen Trujillo's Award-Winning Multifunctional Design

Maroma, a unique folding side table, is the brainchild of designers Ana García and Karen Trujillo of Corchete. Inspired by daily routines and the need for functional, affordable furniture, this innovative design has been recognized with a prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017.

Maroma is more than just a fashionable and discreet table. Its hidden support improves user experience as it has been conceived to be used as a handy laptop stand. The design is a result of systematic approach and qualitative research that led to the creation of a product that is a twist to common auxiliary tables.

The table is mainly made of Beech Plywood fabricated by means of CNC technique. Metallic mechanisms allow the efficient set up of the folding system. The laptop stand is made of plastic laminate on its surface acting as a heat insulator and its two padded pieces are removable for washing. All cuttings are thought to be automatized, whereas the assembly and finishings are conventional.

Maroma is a multifunctional table that doesn’t look like an extra item in the house, instead, it’s intended to be part of the decoration. It can be used as a side table and respecting the needs of the user, the laptop stand might be employed without moving the table or folding it. In addition, it can be used as an auxiliary table that is comfortably stored anywhere.

The development of the product was based on user centered design. The designers made an analysis of different types of lifestyles and trends in design. Then they chose the user profile fitting better with their target customer and asked a group of people about their lifestyle by means of observation and interviews based on images. The research ended up with a mood-board used to define the needs, preferences and behaviors that would help them to develop the concept of Maroma.

The main challenge the designers faced was to put all together the specifications they wanted for the product while keeping a simple and timeless design. In addition, little stats were available and consequently they had to focus on qualitative information and their observational ability. That is why they created their own brief and decided to respect it with little modification until getting Maroma.

Maroma is a testament to the power of design to solve daily needs. Its multifunctionality, affordability, and timeless design make it a worthy addition to any home. This innovative design is a testament to the designers' ability to observe, analyze, and respond to the needs of their target users. It's not just a table, it's a lifestyle solution.
