Peter Cheng's Award-Winning Design Marries Aesthetics and Functionality

Peter Cheng, with the assistance of Sam Tsai, has created a residential design project that stands out for its innovative use of materials and attention to detail. The project, aptly named "Stillness," draws inspiration from nature, using brown as the main color and dark brushwood to show the original texture. The design also features a special metal plate on the sofa back wall, reminiscent of a wall covered with burial clothes. This, along with the use of titanium metal, enhances the overall texture of the space.

Stillness is not just about aesthetics; it also offers unique features that make it functional and comfortable. Indirect lighting is used to shed light on the irregular ceiling, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. A marble wall extends from the entrance area to the living room and dining area, its shape simple and elegant. An antique mirror in the dining area reflects the space, creating an illusion of a wider area.

The design was realized using a variety of materials, including marble, antique mirror, veneer, titanium metal, metal plate, and wood floor. The project was completed in 2016 in Taipei city, Taiwan. It is located in a quiet community on a hillside, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the entrance that bring in plenty of natural light and offer a view of the mountain landscape.

Stillness faced several design challenges, including the use of brown as the main color and the need to depict different surfaces using conversion material. However, the design team managed to overcome these challenges, resulting in a clean, neat shape that carefully deals with sided and materials.

The project has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
