This building, designed by Chin-Shu Chen, is a testament to the belief that incorporating nature into our living spaces can enhance our well-being and provide a much-needed escape from the stresses of urban life. The Comfortable design seamlessly integrates the surrounding natural environment, creating a space that is not only visually appealing but also promotes relaxation and tranquility.
One of the standout features of the Comfortable design is the open living room, which is adorned with a French window that allows natural light to flood the space. This design choice adds an elegant touch to the overall aesthetic and creates a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. Chen's attention to detail is evident in the careful consideration of elements such as proportion, light and heavy, reality and virtuality, which work together to sculpt the expression of the space.
The main wall in the Comfortable design serves a functional purpose by seamlessly connecting the three main areas of the residence: the living room, dining room, and kitchen. This design choice creates a fluid movement throughout the space and enhances the overall functionality of the layout. Additionally, an art display on the gallery serves as a perfect transition area, relieving any sense of closure and providing visual enjoyment.
Chen's use of composite materials, such as wood and stone, adds both functionality and visual interest to the space. These materials not only create a broad visual effect but also contribute to the overall functionality of the design. The careful consideration of factors such as light, texture, and materials ensures that the Comfortable design strikes a balance between privacy and fashion, resulting in a space that is both inviting and stylish.
The Comfortable design project began in October 2014 and was completed in March 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan. Throughout the duration of the project, Chen and his team, including River Chiang and Yvonne Yang, overcame various creative, technical, and research challenges to bring the design to life. The combination of extension, irradiate, and phase served as the underlying research theme, with the aim of creating a space that exudes elegance through the use of simple and neat lines and a diverse range of mediums.
The Comfortable design has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate exceptional technical and creative skills while contributing to improvements in quality of life. Chen's design not only incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology but also makes the world a better place by creating a space that promotes comfort and well-being.
