Interior Residence: A Harmonious Fusion of Function and Emotion

Design by Chin-Shu Chen

The great artist Klimt once said “Life is art, Art is life.” The interactivity between function and emotion in this public space is the best way to prove this quote. Linear divide the open space into different area with different materials. Although it is conceal, it effectively brings out the regional concept.

Chin-Shu Chen, a renowned designer, has created a stunning interior residence that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of function and emotion. With a focus on creating an open and interactive space, Chen has transformed a 30-year-old apartment in Taipei, Taiwan into a modern and inviting home for three generations.

The design of this residence is characterized by its flexible configuration, allowing for seamless transitions between different areas. One of the standout features is the dining area, which can be transformed into an open field, providing a space for family members to communicate and share their feelings. This innovative approach to spatial design promotes a sense of togetherness and connectivity.

The use of natural materials such as stones, woods, and bricks adds a gentle and inviting ambiance to the space. Chen's understanding of the space's structure and environment is evident in the way the materials are incorporated, enhancing the expression and creating a cohesive and harmonious atmosphere. The restoration of the materials' features adds a touch of humanity to the design, making it feel warm and welcoming.

One of the key challenges faced during the design process was the issue of lighting in the 30-year-old apartment. To address this, Chen strategically placed a study room in the middle of the house, filling it with matte glass and iron to allow sunlight to flow into the space. This not only solves the lighting issue but also creates a central space that connects the different areas of the residence while maintaining privacy for each generation.

The completion of this interior residence took place between July 2014 and January 2016. The design has received recognition for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2017 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate exceptional technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Chin-Shu Chen's interior residence is a testament to the power of design in creating harmonious and functional living spaces. By seamlessly integrating function and emotion, this design provides a welcoming and connected environment for multiple generations to thrive and interact.
