Around: A Modern and Flowing Residential House

Creating a Sense of Privacy and Continuity

The One Hong Kong Design presents Around, a unique residential house that breaks away from traditional design conventions to create a flowing and interconnected living space.

The couple behind this project, known as DINK (Double Income, No Kids), desired a calm and restrained living environment. With a focus on work, yoga, and reading, they sought a home that catered to their specific needs, without the need for a traditional sofa-type living room.

The designers at The One Hong Kong Design aimed to create a sense of privacy and closure while breaking free from the constraints of a traditional private house. Instead of relying on static volume combinations, they pursued a continuous moving space that seamlessly connects different areas of the house. The result is an overall space that feels flowing, through, and inseparable.

The main materials used in the Around project include cement paint, wood veneer, and tiles. These materials were carefully selected to enhance the modern and simple aesthetic of the design.

Covering a total area of 200 square meters, Around offers a spacious and open living environment. The designers wanted to blur the boundaries between different spaces, allowing for a natural transition and a sense of openness throughout the house.

To address the climate characteristics of Guangdong, where the project is located, the designers installed a greenhouse balanced central air conditioning and fresh air system. This system helps maintain a balanced indoor temperature and humidity while minimizing the entry of outdoor dust.

One of the challenges faced by the designers was the conflict between the concept of open and flowing spaces and the need for a fully open cloakroom to display the homeowner's extensive collection of clothes. To overcome this, the designers incorporated curtains as partitions between the living room and bedroom, creating a sense of zoning while maintaining a visual connection.

In the design of the cloakroom and desk area, hollow-out blocks were used for the storage cabinet walls. This not only increases regional interaction but also avoids visual fatigue caused by large-area walls.

Around was completed in April 2021 in Guangzhou, following a project duration that started in November 2019. The design has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022.

With its modern aesthetic, flowing spaces, and attention to detail, Around by The One Hong Kong Design offers a unique and refreshing approach to residential design, catering to the specific needs and preferences of its owners.
