As technology continues to shape our lives, human interaction has become increasingly solitary. In response to this, renowned designer Regina Kwok has developed a design concept that aims to remove any barriers that separate residents and create a clear view of the entire living space. This design not only fosters a sense of openness but also allows for more freedom of movement and floor usage.
The centerpiece of this unique design is the bathtub and bathroom, strategically located in the middle of the unit. Surrounding the bathroom are two see-through glass screens, which can be covered with lowering curtains when privacy is desired. In fact, the entire unit features built-in curtains that can be lowered from the ceiling, providing privacy and flexibility as needed.
By removing all pre-existing walls within the flat, what was once a two-bedroom residence has been transformed into a single, expansive living area. This seamless connectivity between spaces allows residents to see from one corner of the unit to the other without any barriers obstructing their view. The use of glass, timber, bricks, cast stones, and engineered stone, along with a black, grey, and white color scheme, creates an industrial aesthetic that adds to the design's unique charm.
Designed with openness in mind, this residential house offers a multifunctional living space. An L-shaped table serves as a writing desk or dining table, depending on the residents' needs. The open living area provides ample space for a studio or sports area, allowing for a personalized and versatile living experience.
Regina Kwok and her team successfully tackled the challenge of incorporating the bathroom as the focal point of the design. By shifting the original layout, they created space for a laundry room and shoe cabinet, while ensuring that the bathroom itself remains spacious and functional. This design truly embodies the desires of the young couple who wanted a living space that hides nothing and fosters a strong sense of togetherness.
Completed in March 2015 in Hong Kong, this residential house design by Regina Kwok has garnered recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade that recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This design not only meets professional and industrial requirements but also contributes to a better world by promoting openness, connectivity, and freedom.
