Vanke Emerald Art Gallery: A Testament to Minimalist Design

Zhou Ping's Award-Winning Design Fuses Simplicity and Modern Art

Vanke Emerald Art Gallery, designed by Zhou Ping, is a serene living art gallery that embodies the power of minimalism. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, defies the norms of expressionism, offering a tranquil space that harmonizes with nature.

The unique properties of this design lie in its moderate use of decorations and colors. By avoiding unnecessary elements, the gallery allows visitors to find inner peace amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. The architectural space and natural light are utilized to the fullest, creating a space that nestles in nature. The use of pure materials and colors, coupled with a unique triangular window, maximizes the natural light in the space, offering an opportunity to experience the changes of natural light and the four seasons.

Upon entering the gallery, visitors are greeted by a stone counter against a bare concrete wall, exuding simplicity and elegance. The reception area features a French window on the right, inviting natural light and views into the center, fostering a dialogue between nature and souls. The space is enlivened by the Filling Spaces art installation, which fills the grey space with pink balloons that float in the light and shadow, accompanied by soft music.

The gallery, which spans an area of 1100 square meters, is devoid of deliberate expressions or tedious decorations. Everything in the space appears natural and elegant, demonstrating the power of minimalism. Paper sculptures by English artist Richard Sweeney hang in the air, soft and smooth, complementing the transparent architectural model area. The combination of hardness and softness shapes the depth of the space, adding a dynamic touch to the otherwise tranquil setting.

The project, completed in July 2018, was inspired by the desire to create simple, unique, and elegant spaces. Unlike spaces with excessive decorations and superfluous colors that often result in chaotic visual impact, the designer aimed for tranquility. Austere wood, elegant items, simple colors, and natural concrete were used to showcase the tranquility of the space and explore the supreme beauty in simple life.

The Vanke Emerald Art Gallery is a testament to the power of minimalist design. It is a tranquil and beautiful living art gallery that combines simple design techniques with modern art elements. The design, which avoids deliberate expressions and tedious decorations, embodies the power of minimalism. The gallery is a harmony of hardness and softness, smoothness and roughness, perfectly encapsulating the designer's vision of creating a serene space that resonates with nature.
