Optika Di Moda: A Blend of History and Contemporary Design

Preserving Budapest's 19th Century Charm in a Luxury Eyewear Store

In the heart of Budapest, designer Tamás Csiszér has transformed a historic building into Optika Di Moda, a luxury opticians store that seamlessly blends the old with the new. With its original 19th century features and contemporary design elements, this eyewear store offers a unique and elegant shopping experience.

Optika Di Moda is located on a bustling street lined with restaurants, bars, and cafes, making it the perfect destination for fashion-conscious individuals seeking designer eyewear. The building, constructed in 1850 by Matyas Zitterbach, once served as the residence of renowned Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. Csiszér's vision was to honor the building's rich history while creating a modern space that showcases its original architectural elements.

The highlight of Optika Di Moda is the stunning arched brick ceilings, which were carefully restored to their former glory. The exposed brickwork serves as a frame for the sleek white display cabinets, counters, and floors, creating a striking contrast between the old and the new. The use of glossy finishes further emphasizes the proportions of the space, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design.

To enhance the ambiance, Csiszér incorporated chrome chandeliers that pay homage to the Romantic design of the building. These modern fixtures provide a contemporary update while maintaining the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Soft lighting throughout the store further adds to the luxurious feel, inviting customers to explore the carefully curated eyewear collection.

The design process presented several challenges due to the building's listed status and strict regulations. However, Csiszér successfully navigated these obstacles, incorporating two toilets and a small kitchen as instructed by the authorities. To optimize space, a loft was designed above the staffroom to serve as a stockroom, ensuring efficient storage without compromising the store's aesthetic.

Optika Di Moda spans a total area of 66m2, with 34m2 dedicated to the examination room and private area, and 32m2 allocated for the exhibition space. This layout allows for a seamless flow between the different sections of the store, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for customers.

With its blend of history and contemporary design, Optika Di Moda stands as a testament to Tamás Csiszér's ability to create unique and visually stunning spaces. By preserving the original features of the building and incorporating modern elements, Csiszér has successfully transformed this historic space into a luxury eyewear store that captures the essence of Budapest's rich cultural heritage.

Optika Di Moda was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2017 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. This recognition highlights the store's commitment to meeting professional and industrial requirements while providing a fulfilling and positive shopping experience.
