Living and Forging Together: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture

Chien-Neng Chang's Award-Winning Residential Design Fuses Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

In the heart of Taichung, Taiwan, a unique residential house stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of nature and architecture. Designed by Chien-Neng Chang, the house, aptly named "Living and Forging Together," is a celebration of natural elements, minimalist design, and the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The design inspiration for this residential house comes from the desire to live close to nature. The house is adorned with symmetrical floor-to-ceiling windows that allow ample sunlight to permeate the indoor space during the day, while warm indoor lights elegantly expose the interior to the surrounding environment at night. The design of these windows creates distinct visual perceptions, with the architectural structures and lush plant landscapes creating appealing architectural and indoor features.

What sets this design apart from others is the extraordinary scene of lush garden landscape brought into the house. The minimalist and modest colors used for the house exterior blend congruously with the colors of the natural environment. The house is constructed with plenty of semi-outdoor spaces such as balconies and terraces that obscure the boundary between the indoor and outdoor spaces, catering to the house owner's aspiration to live close to nature.

The realization of this design is distinct from most traditional design styles. The porch is decorated with wood grilles and slate bricks that develop a natural ambiance. The tea table and chairs, made of tree burls and weathered woods, are placed strategically for people to sit and savor tea while appreciating the great gardening landscapes. The TV wall, composed of brown granites, consistently manifests the natural image. Alongside the window, the long bamboo mat benches decorated in the living room add to the laid-back charms.

The property spans 217 square meters and is consistently decorated with woods, creating an aesthetic living environment. The master bedroom on the 2nd floor is decorated with an extensive wood screen figuratively resembling a feather, which agreeably corresponds to the yarn curtains adorned on the bed. The dressing room, decorated with woods, matte glass, and iron adornments, exposes a unique style. The study room, decorated with a wood grille panel and the beautiful patterns of an emerald stone wall, reveals the graceful humanity.

This design project, completed on the 30th of October 2017, faced creative, technical, and research challenges. However, Chien-Neng Chang overcame these challenges and created a design that was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
