Oriental Esthetics: A Chinese Style Villa House

Unveiling the Spirit of Chinese Literati in Contemporary Residential Life

The land of the ancient Shu Kingdom in Chengdu, China, is a treasure trove of natural and cultural resources. Inspired by the depth of history, the openness of the kingdom, the subtlety of poetry, and the sonority of Sichuan opera, designer Yanming Yin has created Oriental Esthetics, a Chinese style villa house that embodies the spirit of Chinese literati.

Oriental Esthetics stands out with its unique design and thoughtful features. The five-floor house is divided into dynamic and static areas, catering to the needs of three generations living together. To enhance interpenetration and flow among the varied floors, a suspended atrium is created separately on the basement floor and between the first and second floors. This design choice not only maintains a relaxed, bright, and transparent spatial experience but also establishes a unified living aesthetic.

The house showcases the beauty of Chinese literati through its leisurely details. The lobby and grey tea mirrors expand the spatial view, resembling an intentional environment of an ink landscape painting. The atrium, serving as the dining room, features an overhead artistic chandelier light and stainless steel screens that create a luxurious temperament, emphasizing the vertical visual effect of the spacious atrium. The dining room and living room are openly connected, strengthening the communication between the varied spaces on the same floor. The bathroom, adorned with natural stone, offers a unique and immersive experience for the owner.

With a focus on functionality, Oriental Esthetics is designed to accommodate the needs of a modern family. The house includes a living room, studio, open deck, and three bedrooms for the owner, elder, and kids. In the basement space, a mezzanine area is inserted, integrating the sunken courtyard, guest area, billiard room, video room, and chess and card room into a unified space for multiple recreational functions.

Despite facing challenges such as a tight construction deadline and the difficulty of cross-construction between soft and hard textured decorations, Yanming Yin and the design team successfully brought Oriental Esthetics to life. The design process involved simplifying specific details while maintaining the artistic and regional cultural characteristics of the space. Through innovative solutions and the use of soft-textured decorations, the quality loss was offset, resulting in a remarkable final product.

Oriental Esthetics is a testament to the fusion of history and contemporary living. It captures the essence of Chinese literati through its graceful living room, auspicious views, bedroom walls, and decorative accessories. This Chinese style villa house is a true masterpiece that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Shu Kingdom while providing a comfortable and elegant lifestyle for its residents.
