Kevin Hu's Innovative Design Breathes New Life into Ancient Brickkiln Culture

The Brickkiln Folk Inn and Museum is a unique project that marries modern design with traditional elements. The museum, built along the waterfront, offers a serene environment for visitors to immerse themselves in the rich brick-culture of Jin Xi. The ground floor houses a light dining area and a small-sized theme classroom, while the first floor features a brick-cultural exhibition area and a large meeting room. The design of the museum is a nod to the past, with its use of native materials like brick and bamboo, and a focus on natural light.

The second phase of the project is the Folk Inn, a collection of 20 rooms spread across 10 single buildings. The Inn, built using a light steel frame system, is a typical example of Jiangnan residential construction. The interior design, much like the museum, draws inspiration from the local brick culture and Chinese classical garden culture, aiming to strike a balance between modernity and tradition.

In terms of materials, Hu chose native elements such as brick and bamboo, combining them in innovative ways to create a modern yet simple aesthetic. The use of local brick as a decorative surface is a tribute to the town's brick-burning history. The designer also made extensive use of natural light, setting up skylights in the lobby area and using floor-to-ceiling glass to bring the outdoors in.

The project also faced its share of challenges. The goal was not just to renovate an old brick kiln but to breathe new life into a historical and cultural village. The design team had to preserve the original architectural style while injecting new functions into the space. The result is a multi-functional space that serves as a cultural museum, a folk inn, and a training center for rural builders.

The Brickkiln Folk Inn and Museum project is a shining example of how design can be used to preserve and promote cultural heritage. The project has been recognized with a Platinum A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, a testament to its innovative design and cultural significance.
