House 24: A Masterpiece of Modern Residential Architecture

Park + Associates Pte Ltd's Innovative Design Wins Golden A' Design Award

In the world of architecture, innovation often springs from constraints. This is the case with House 24, a residential marvel designed by Park + Associates Pte Ltd. The house, located in Singapore, is a testament to the creative potential of challenging site conditions and the power of thoughtful design. The project was awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2017, a testament to its extraordinary excellence and impact on the world of architecture.

The inspiration for House 24 came from its unique location. The house is situated on a triangular plot, a challenging condition that the design team turned into an opportunity. The site adjoins a lushly landscaped state land, a feature the designers endeavored to take advantage of in every available opportunity and habitable space. The result is a home that not only meets the client's spatial, functional, and privacy requirements but also beautifully integrates with its natural surroundings.

What sets House 24 apart is its unique approach to timber craftsmanship. The courtyard screen fronting the street is a modern aesthetic and detailing exploration of what timber craftsmanship might mean in contemporary architecture. The screen manifests itself as a refined and rhythmic facade, creating a delightful pattern of light and shadow throughout the day. This feature reinforces the client's desire for a home that reflects its tropical locality.

The realization of House 24 involved a variety of materials and construction methods. Natural stone, including Roman travertine, G654 grey granite, and Shanxi Black granite, were used alongside American Walnut timber flooring and veneer on feature walls. Accoya acetylated wood was used for external cladding and decking, and the courtyard screen, creating a harmonious blend of natural and modern elements.

The design of House 24 was not without its challenges. The triangular plot of land, after necessary setback requirements, presented a significant constraint. However, the design team took this as an opportunity to rethink the conventional entry sequence of residential dwellings and create a more layered and sequential experience. The result is a serene and tranquil space that marks the transition between the public and private.

House 24 is a testament to the power of innovative design. Despite its challenging site conditions, the design team at Park + Associates Pte Ltd was able to create a home that is not only functional and beautiful but also a reflection of its tropical locality. The house's unique features, coupled with its thoughtful integration with the surrounding landscape, make it a deserving recipient of the Golden A' Design Award.
