Blizzard Cinema, a project by Vincent Li, is a unique cinema design that reimagines the movie-watching experience. The design draws its inspiration from the power and motion of a blizzard, aiming to encapsulate the viewer in a dreamlike world where ideas, thoughts, and feelings are captured and transformed into a new understanding.
The unique properties of the design lie in its ability to create a dynamic and powerful space. The walls of the cinema are designed to mimic waves of wind, and the false ceiling is shaped to resemble frozen ice sheets, creating a sense of being in the midst of a blizzard. The color white is used extensively to represent the snowy blizzard, with gray flooring to simulate a snow-covered ground.
The design was realized using a variety of materials, including stone, acoustic panels, plastic laminate, carpet, and gypsum board. The project, which spans 2200 sqm, was completed in May 2016 in Shenzhen, China. The design process involved careful space planning and circulation plotting to guide customers intuitively to different destinations within the cinema.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was transforming a rectilinear space into a modern, dynamic movie theatre. The designer had to mark out over 100 lines by hand on the ceiling, wall, and floor, adjusting them based on site constraints and dimensions to achieve the best results.
Blizzard Cinema has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
