In a country with limited land size, the issue of burial space has always been a significant concern. However, traditional Korean culture places a strong emphasis on private and family spaces for the deceased. This has posed a challenge in finding a balance between the need for burial space and the cultural preference for privacy.
The Reflected, designed by Sung Jang Laboratory, offers a unique solution to this problem. This mini-family mausoleum draws a clear line between itself and public ossuaries or private burial grounds, bringing about a significant social and cultural change in Korea.
Measuring 180 x 200 x 180 cm, the Reflected is specifically tailored to the needs of Korean burial culture. It can accommodate 4, 6, or 8 cremated urns, allowing families to keep their loved ones together in a space that offers both security and privacy.
The design of the Reflected is not only innovative but also sustainable. It is made using machine-fabricated granite, ensuring durability and longevity. This material choice also aligns with the environmental concerns within the burial activities of the deceased.
The Reflected has garnered recognition in the design community, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious accolade is awarded to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Reflected stands out for its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.
With its unique design and sustainable approach, the Reflected offers a solution that not only addresses the environmental concerns of burial activities but also respects the cultural traditions and preferences of Korean society. It represents a significant step forward in redefining the concept of burial spaces and honoring the memory of loved ones.
