Design Unique Properties
The Chrysallis masterplan takes advantage of the existing elevated rail structure, which was constructed in the 1930s as part of the West Side Improvement Project. Despite no trains running on it for over 20 years, the rail tracks have become a thriving urban wilderness, covering nearly seven acres. This design aims to preserve and enhance this natural environment while incorporating various leisure activities for the public to enjoy. Additionally, the design includes the development of cable-stayed bridges along the Hudson's River waterfront.
Design Specifications
The Hudson's River Waterfront & Chrysallis design spans 1.5 miles in length and covers an area of 6.8 acres.
Design Challenges
An important challenge faced during the creation of this design was the integration of urban design, landscape design, bridge design, and infrastructure design with sustainability considerations, environmental design, and ecology. The goal was to create a harmonious and functional space that respects the natural environment while providing a unique experience for visitors.
Design Notes
The Chrysallis Park is a testament to the potential of repurposing existing infrastructure for the benefit of the community. By transforming an unused elevated rail structure into a vibrant linear park, this design offers a new perspective on urban green spaces. With its sustainability design considerations and diverse range of leisure activities, the Hudson's River Waterfront & Chrysallis design is a true testament to the power of innovative and thoughtful design.
