Brain Food: Redefining Greek Souvenirs with Humor and Functionality

A Unique Approach to Bookmarks by Natasha Chatziangeli

Inspired by Greek history and the joy of reading, Brain Food bookmarks offer a fresh perspective on the traditional souvenir. Designed as spoon, fork, and knife shapes, these bookmarks combine humor and functionality to enhance your reading experience.

Brain Food bookmarks were created by designer Natasha Chatziangeli with the aim of redefining Greek souvenirs. Drawing inspiration from Greece's rich philosophical past, the bookmarks symbolize reading as a nourishing activity for the mind. The printed images on the bookmarks blend history, taste, and images of Greek summer, creating a unique and captivating design.

What sets Brain Food bookmarks apart is their playful interpretation of reading as "food for the brain." The bookmarks are made of thin transparent plexiglass with partly transparent images, allowing you to see through them and read the letters on your page. Each bookmark shape corresponds to a different genre of literature, such as romance, poetry, or science fiction, adding a touch of whimsy to your reading experience. The package includes detailed instructions, presented in a surrealistic manner, to guide you in choosing the appropriate shape for your reading material.

Brain Food bookmarks are made using transparent plexiglass and a laser cutting machine. The bookmarks measure 190mm x 37mm x 3mm, and they come in a set with each cutlery theme individually packaged. The package size is 200mm x 50mm x 9mm, making it convenient to carry and store.

Aside from their obvious use as bookmarks, Brain Food bookmarks can also be used to stir your cocktail, adding a touch of fun and functionality to your social gatherings. The bookmarks were designed and produced in Thessaloniki, Greece, with the project starting in May 2016 and finishing in June 2016. They were exhibited in the "It's oh, all so souvenir to me" annual exhibition in Thessaloniki and Athens during the summer of 2016.

One of the main challenges in creating Brain Food bookmarks was translating the concept of philosophy into a small object with a positive attitude. By deconstructing the meaning and approaching questioning, thinking, and learning as food for thought, the concept of Brain Food bookmarks emerged. The semi-transparent sticker applied over the plexiglass surface strikes a balance between color and the ability to see the page of the book through the material, ensuring a seamless reading experience.

Brain Food bookmarks have gained recognition for their innovative design and practicality. In 2017, they were awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Giftware Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Brain Food bookmarks are respected for their integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to readers worldwide.
