Cargo Club: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Revamped Nightclub Identity by Dongdao Design Team Wins Silver A' Design Award

Dongdao Design Team's rebranding of Beijing's renowned Cargo Club merges traditional Chinese elements with modern Western influences, earning them a Silver A' Design Award. The new brand image reflects the club's unique blend of traditional Chinese and pop music, symbolizing the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

The inspiration for the design came from the client's desire to convey a mix of fashion and culture, creating a landmark that embodies both Beijing's cultural heritage and contemporary nightlife. The logo, a key element of the rebranding, is composed of two rays of light - one black and white, the other colored - converging on a stage. This design not only captures the vibrant ambiance of a nightclub but also symbolizes the merging of different cultures and musical styles.

Cargo Club, a popular nightlife destination in Beijing, has recently made a grand comeback after seven years in operation. The club's new identity, pioneered by the Dongdao Design Team, is a testament to its unique positioning as a fusion of traditional Chinese music and pop music. The logo's design, resembling a five-pointed star, is a nod to Beijing's hard rock scene. From another perspective, the black and white light resonates with traditional Chinese painting, while the colored light represents Western fashion.

The design realization process involved a visual presentation that combined the themes of ink painting and neon light. The sprayed ink and clash on traditional stone lions, the Temple of Heaven, and Beijing Opera figures symbolize the rebellious and energetic spirit of nightclubs, as well as the expression of human emotions.

As part of the rebranding, the design team extended the application of the logo to create a brand culture that is multi-level and multi-angle, showcasing a new state of nightlife. The CARGO sign, with its Beijing cultural connotations and industry symbolic elements of spotlight, embodies a joyful and entertaining atmosphere. The club has become a new landmark for Beijing's entertainment scene, converging passion and joy.

The project, which started in January 2015 and finished in July of the same year, was carried out in Beijing. The design was awarded Silver in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2017, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, exhibit strong technical characteristics and artistic skill, and evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
