Bookhouse Latrine: A Unique Architectural Experiment

Recycling Books for Public Use in a Creative Way

Bookhouse Latrine is an innovative architectural project by designer Yongwook Seong that combines a latrine and a bookhouse. This unique design aims to recycle and recirculate physical books for public use, offering a creative solution in the digital age.

The Bookhouse Latrine project is located in the Garden City Lands in Richmond, Canada. As the usage of physical books declines with the rise of digital media, this architectural experiment repurposes books as a wall material, redefining their role in our lives.

The centerpiece of the design is a waterless composting toilet, placed in the center of the structure. Surrounding the toilet are wooden bookshelves that serve as a load-bearing structure, with the books on the shelves becoming the "walls" of the latrine. The choice of books and materials used allows for a versatile program, transforming the space into various settings such as a chapel, a meditation retreat, a DVD storage, a thrift store, or even a house for stuffed animals.

The construction of the Bookhouse Latrine involves wooden laminate bookshelves built on a concrete base. A steel mesh screen is installed on the roof to provide natural daylight, while glazing panels are attached to the bookshelves using a bolted glazing system.

One of the key features of the design is the interaction between the user and the space. When a book or other recycled material is pulled from the bookshelf, a gap is created, allowing natural light to penetrate the interior. This subtle tension between the interior and exterior creates a unique experience for the user.

Over time, as books are taken away from the Bookhouse Latrine, it encourages donations from the community, further contributing to the recycling and recirculation of physical books.

The Bookhouse Latrine project was completed in October 2016 in Vancouver, Canada. It presents an unprecedented experience for users, questioning the fundamental function of a toilet through the presence of the "book walls."

This innovative design has been recognized and awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Bookhouse Latrine stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
