Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi: A Blend of Ottoman and Contemporary Art in Coffee Packaging

A Unique Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Design Name: Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi

Inspired by the art of Ebru, Ottoman patterns, and Ottoman binding art, designer Nida Başlı has created a stunning packaging design for the renowned Turkish coffee brand, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi. Combining elements of Ottoman and contemporary art, this student project showcases the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

The concept behind this design is variety, and Başlı has successfully captured this through the use of small, single-use coffee packages. Each package features a different flavor and shape, adding a touch of uniqueness to the overall design. For instance, rectangular packages contain mastic gum and chocolate flavors, while triangle packages house cinnamon and mint-flavored Turkish coffee. To further enhance the artistic appeal, each package is adorned with numbers that correspond to specific Ottoman figures and contemporary artists.

The main material used in this design is kraft paper, which is laser-cut to create intricate patterns and designs. The use of stickers and aluminum foil adds a touch of elegance and practicality to the packaging. With dimensions of 200mm x 30mm x 300mm, these coffee packages are not only visually appealing but also functional.

Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the Ottoman and contemporary art elements. Başlı delved into the world of Ottoman art, exploring Ebru, Ottoman binding, figures, and symbols. Additionally, she studied the works of Turkish artists exhibited in the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition, incorporating their art into the design.

One of the major challenges faced during this project was finding the perfect balance between Ottoman and contemporary art. With numerous choices available in the realm of contemporary art, Başlı had to carefully select the elements that would complement the traditional Ottoman motifs. Countless sketches were made to achieve the desired fusion of styles.

This exceptional design has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. In 2017, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that showcase technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

The Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi coffee packaging design by Nida Başlı is a testament to the power of art and innovation. By seamlessly blending Ottoman and contemporary art, this design not only pays homage to Turkish culture but also captivates consumers with its unique and visually striking aesthetic.
