The inspiration for Pier 38 came from the characteristic theme of Middle Eastern docks and the feel of an old, lazy shipping yard. The designers aimed to create a relaxed dock-like space where people could unwind and spend time, a unique offering amidst the competition of over 50 other restaurants in the area.
The uniqueness of Pier 38 lies in its blend of everyday dining with theme-based interiors. The design and cuisine both draw inspiration from Middle Eastern port towns, emulating the old ship docking yards. The use of old railway sleepers, a rustic worn-out floor, and big searchlights over the bar contribute to the dockyard feel. The selection of materials and elements highlight the theme while providing essential services, creating a cohesive feel for the space.
The realization of the design involved the use of special old railway track sleeper wood as the main wood component. The weathered wood texture, rustic dark black tiles, cement punning finish on walls, and brick arches contribute to the old-world charm. The materials, mostly sourced from scrap dealers, also reduce the restaurant's carbon footprint.
The design specifications include the use of sleeper wood, which adds an old weathered look to the space. Light fixtures made from waste drums, cones, and scrapped lighthouse beam lights act as highlighters for specific areas. The central column, clad with rough multicolored slate stone, forms the central highlight, surrounded by drum lights. The bar counter, clad with sliced wood blocks, is highlighted with lighthouse beam lights from the ceiling.
The Pier 38 space begins with an outdoor area designed as a docking bridge leading into the main restaurant. Once inside, guests can choose from different levels and seating arrangements. The bar counter, lit with lighthouse beam lights, is the most visually striking element.
The design process involved a study of small town port areas to understand the basic material look and feel of the space. Ports of Middle Eastern countries from the late 60s and 70s were researched to understand spatial organization and identify elements that could form the design language. The main challenge was developing a port-side restaurant in a busy restaurant hub of a commercial development, creating a new theme that stands out right from the entrance.
In conclusion, Pier 38 is a unique dining experience that successfully brings the charm of Middle Eastern docks to a modern setting. The design, a testament to the creativity and innovation of the team, offers a unique dining experience that stands out amidst the bustling restaurant scene of Cyberhub, Gurgaon.
