The inspiration for the Isi pendant came from Gabbin's own experiences as a jeweler. Spending long hours at her workbench, she noticed the need for a versatile piece of jewelry that could transition from a professional setting to a more casual one. This led to the creation of a pendant that could transform from a simple, understated piece to a flashy, eye-catching one, depending on the wearer's needs.
The unique properties of the Isi pendant lie in its patented transformation mechanism. Starting from a basic geometric shape like a sphere, the pendant can change into a cross or other shapes, depending on the model. This transformation is made possible by partially hidden hinges that allow the jewel to open and assume a new shape. The pendant is available in gold and diamonds or silver and precious stones, catering to a variety of tastes and budgets.
The first prototype of the Isi pendant was entirely handmade. It was then developed on a computer and produced using techniques such as lost wax micro casting, welding, and manual setting. The use of a bulino, a knife for cutting metal and setting stones, was instrumental in the production process. The pendant's specifications include a sphere diameter of 1.5 cm, an opened size of 4 cm by 3.5 cm, 3.6 ct of diamonds, and 18 kt gold.
The Isi pendant is not just a piece of jewelry; it's also a playful accessory. Its value lies in the precious metals and stones used, which can be engraved and modeled. The pendant's design is a nod to the creativity of jewelers and watchmakers of the 1800s and early 1900s, who were known for their innovative and original mechanisms.
The Isi pendant was created in 2008 in the Gior jeweler’s lab in Belluno and was patented by utility model in the Padova chamber of commerce in January 2009. The design process involved extensive research into the daily lives of working men and women, as well as technical considerations to ensure the pendant's transformation mechanism worked flawlessly. Overcoming the challenge of creating the pendant's unique shape once opened was a significant achievement for Gabbin.
In conclusion, Isabella Gabbin's Isi pendant is a testament to the power of innovation in the world of jewelry design. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, Gabbin has created a piece of jewelry that is not only beautiful but also versatile and fun. The Isi pendant is a shining example of how design can enhance our daily lives, making it worthy of the prestigious A' Design Award it received.
