Coq: A Revolution in Cheese Trolleys

Patrick Sarran's Award-Winning Design Marries Functionality and Aesthetics

Coq, a chilled cheese trolley designed by Patrick Sarran, is a perfect blend of innovation, design, and technology. Inspired by traditional French Camembert cheese boxes, this unique design has won the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017.

The Coq cheese trolley stands out for its compact size, making it ideal for small dining rooms. It is designed to serve cheese stylishly, protect delicate dishes, and occupy minimal space. The design is a convergence of functions, materials, virtual optimization, economy of means, and manufacturing technologies, all aimed at creating a beautiful design.

Coq is manufactured on a small scale, with a structure made of solid beech and molded beech. The interior equipment is made of solid black laminated material. The cooling system is based on eutectic technology and an electronic module that includes a fan. The design is modular, facilitating after-sales service.

The trolley can be dismantled in one minute without any tools. It has super-soft wheels on bearings, a eutectic cold pack, and an electric module containing a 12V battery. The finish includes polyurethane varnishes and lacquers. The packaging is sturdy, wrapped in cardboard and strapped to a pallet.

The Coq cheese trolley is not just a functional tool but also a piece of performance art. Stored in a fridge between services, the tray is set into the trolley to keep the cheese at the correct temperature. The trolley is easily pushed by the waiter and is then opened out. Fine cheeses are presented attractively and in ideal tasting conditions.

The design project began in Toulouse in 2012. After several tests and functional modifications, the prototype of Coq was exhibited in November 2014 at the Equiphotel international trade fair in Paris. Since then, Coq has continued to be improved. The design process involved overcoming several technical challenges, including how to have the fan switch off when the box is opened, where to place the top when one is serving cheese, and how to slide the board out to make space for a plate.

In conclusion, Patrick Sarran's Coq cheese trolley is a testament to the power of design, innovation, and technology in enhancing lifestyle. It is a perfect example of how a simple, functional tool can be transformed into a piece of art that stimulates the senses and enhances the dining experience.
