The Evening Radiance project is situated by the riverside of the Tamsui River, offering a stunning view from the living room, dining room, and master bedroom. The design is aimed at keeping the interior room wide and open, highlighting the riverside scenery and advantageous lighting. The display rack in the living room serves multiple functions, acting as a screen, a sofa side table, and a lounge for the pet, creating a space where the pet and its owner can enjoy spending time together.
The design is realized using a variety of materials including iron metal, grey tile, wood-pieces, venice paint, glasses, steel, and wood flooring. The site area measures 136 sq.m. The design was completed by a team comprising of Cheng-Yuan Huang and Kai-Chen Chiu. The project started in September 2013 and was completed in March 2014.
The design features a slope ceiling that begins at the entrance and ends at the living room. The large-size cement-style tiles apply to the whole elevation, creating a continuous pavement. To maximize daylight in the public room, a see-through L-shape metal rack of the TV wall visually separates the TV back wall from the ceiling and the column.
One of the unique aspects of this design is its consideration for the owner’s pet. The design includes a planned recreation area beside the show shelf in the living room for the pet to get closer to the owner. The design also aimed to present the original status of the house without compartment walls, emphasizing the beautiful scenery outside the window and abundant lighting in the room.
The design faced several challenges, including maintaining the open space feeling while emphasizing the penetration of space to highlight the scenery outside of the window and take advantage of light-oriented design. Despite these challenges, the design was successful in creating a multifunctional space that caters to the needs of the homeowners and their pet.
In conclusion, Cheng-Yuan Huang's Evening Radiance is a remarkable residential house design that beautifully combines functionality and aesthetics. The design's unique properties, thoughtful consideration for the user and their pet, and its success in overcoming design challenges make it deserving of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award it received in 2017.
